BCFE students to lose out on education ‘’some courses would go from having 2 [class groups] to just one class group’’

Oscar award winning Ballyfermot College of Further Education (BCFE) are set to loose ten lecturers in the coming months. These job losses are a result to the introduction of the solas bill and recent education cute back across the post leaving certificate courses.

Christine Moynihan a lecturer in BCFE explained that

‘’some will be made unemployed; others will lose hours and see a huge reduction in their standard of living. Those left will see their working week extended again, teaching bigger class, with reduced facilities and reduced morale. ‘’

It’s not only the lecturers that are at a loss. As some of the courses that BCFE offer could possibly be cut. Moynihan explained that

‘’some courses would go from having 2 to just one class group’’

Thus resulting in students losing out on education chances.

In response to these cuts

‘’a group of concerned teachers from across the college with the backing of the whole college community’’

have set up a Save BCFE campaign that has been gathering momentum since its establishment.

The campaign is also trying to reverse the change to the student pupil ratio from 17:1 to 19:1. The campaign also hope

‘’To be allowed to start creating courses again at higher education 6 and above and for a change in rule to allow BCFE students to be allowed access a 3rd level grant’’.

As of today BCFE students undertaking the Degree credited by DCU are not entitled to 3rd level funding because the course is not been taking in a 3rd level institution.

The campaign holds a cult presence on social networking sites such as Facebook. A strong crowd of over 2,000 past and present staff and students and fighting to keep the excellent reputation of the college alive have been sharing their success stories and what BCFE means to them.

Trevor Halpin Editor in Chief of Music Review Unsigned explained that

‘’the great thing about the college is the one to one support from the lecturers; the students are equally supportive, both for feedback and any help if stuck on tricky assignments.’’

Many other students echoed what Halpin said such as Daniel Pitcher who now works with Dublin’s number one station FM104

‘’The practical aspects of the media courses and the support of the teaching staff is just part of the reason Ballyfermot has such a brilliant reputation.’’

Irish legend and ex BCFE rock school student Micky Joe Harte added

‘’It’s simply not easy to find proper words to define how BCFE has helped me grow as a musician and performer.’’

Jeanne Colwell an ex BCFE lecturer voice her concerns for fellow students and staff members

‘’ to lose the college as we know it would be tantamount to gross negligence on the part of the decision-makers.”

Jeanne also added discussed that people working in the industry would always favor employing BCFE graduates over other university graduates as BCFE students have been taught how to do the job properly and not just the theory behind it.

The BCFE campaign recently rallied outside the Dail in Dublin against the increased student to teacher ratio. Daniel Pitcher reported that a press conference was held by the save BCFE campaign

‘’at the press conference I heard from teachers, current students and past students, giving their view on the proposed cuts.’’

Pitcher also told us how one girl from Limerick who is studying media in BCFE spoke about hoe she is nearly finished her degree

‘’but at the same time expressed her concern about how cuts would affect her siblings chances and options when they are leaving school.’’

The protest gained a good turnout and received various media coverage across Ireland. These new cuts proposed by the minister of Education Rauri Quinn will have devastating effect on the number of school leavers as BCFE and various colleges of further education is their only chance of a college education. If course are dropped then there will be less places for school leavers and less of a chance of further education.

‘’The campaign is progressing on. We have attended many meetings with TD’s, Senators and Counsellors – it’s a case of making them aware of the issues and try and get them to see that these cuts and restrictions are bad for young people, bad for jobs and bad for the creative economy’’ added Christine Moynihan.

Christine Moynihan ”some will be made unemployed, others will loose hours”

Christine Moynihan is a lecturer in BCFE who talks about what is happening in BCFE under the new education cuts. In recent weeks a campaign title Save Ballyfermot College was set up by

‘’a group of concerned teachers from across the college with the backing of the whole college community.’’

The campaign was set up to try reverse the change to the student pupil ratio from 17:1 to 19:1.

The staff of BCFE is also facing job losses at the end of the academic year.

‘’Some will be made unemployed, others will lose hours and see a huge reduction in their standard of living. Those left will see their working week extended again, teaching bigger class, with reduced facilities and reduced morale. ‘’

These staff losses will gave a knock on effect straight to the students attending the college. With courses been threatened to be cut and the possibility that

‘’some courses would go from having 2 to just one class group’’

meaning less people have the chance to have education.

‘’The campaign is progressing on. We have attended many meetings with TD’s, Senators and Counsellors – it’s a case of making them aware of the issues and try and get them to see that these cuts and restrictions are bad for young people, bad for jobs and bad for the creative economy.’’

”An educational institution that has proved to be a conveyor belt for media, animation and Oscar winning professionals” says Glenn Dowd

Written By Glenn Dowd, Editor of Irish News Review

SOLAS have evidently made some abhorrent decisions without knowing many facts. Ballyfermot College Of Further Education is a home to some of the finest courses on offer in any Irish educational institution. It is a college like no other, combining first rate courses with first rate teaching staff. The college are already struggling due to cuts made over the past number of years yet they continue to blossom. The importance of Ballyfermot College to the local area and the Irish educational system cannot be underestimated as it has acted as a terrific platform for everyone that has walked through its doors.

I can’t comprehend that a college I spent three great years at and graduated from last year might not get to fulfill the potential it has to make on the students of tomorrow.

During my three years at the college I had the pleasure of working with some top media and business professionals, you just don’t get that experience anywhere else. BCFE treats you as an individual, something other educational facilities could not even dream of doing. Throughout my time in the college and specifically when acting as Deputy Editor of the award winning BCFE Bulletin I have seen first hand the budgetary restraints facing the college. However such is the belief instilled by teachers upon their students that anything can be achieved even amidst the economic downturn. How else does a college win a student media award for Best Small Publication Of The Year for four years in a row? How else do graduates go on to produce Oscar winning films?

If it wasn’t for BCFE I would never have achieved what I have to date. BCFE thought me to constantly strive for better both as a freelance journalist and as an individual.

Two and a half years ago I developed a website as a college project ,today it remains a valuable source for many seeking a break into media while it has also provided a steady flow of articles into the tabloid newspapers. If it wasn’t for the tutelage of the BCFE staff, this venture never would have gotten off the ground.

The majority of people this country will require for a stable future are already living on foreign soil. SOLAS will act as a catalyst to that matter and further drain the resources available to us. It will also lead to further unemployment within the teaching sector despite the quality evident at BCFE.

If the Irish government ever had any common sense or value of meaning it would be putting money into BCFE, not taking it out. The Save BCFE campaign has been very credible to date but it is extremely important that momentum is not lost during the summer months when students are off. The fight is a long way from been over, but with the backing of every BCFE graduate, Save BCFE will be a resounding success.

BCFE Rally all over the Irish Media

BCFE Tweet

BCFE tweet

BCFE rallied outside the Dail yesterday against the increased ratio to the student population.  This morning BCFE have been all over the media gaining momentum to the save BCFE campaign. Across all the media platforms BCFE’s deputy principal Kevin Devine spoke of the impact upon BCFE and the up coming cuts.

Kevin Devine, deputy principal at Ballyfermot College of Further Education, said the impact of the cuts on Ballyfermot College were

“simply a matter of simple arithmetic.”

Mr Devine said the loss of specialist expertise would have a devastating effect.

“We would lose nine to ten teachers…Some of the courses we would lose would be a specialist music rock school, a pre-nursing class, at least one if not two or three animation classes.”

He also added on Morning Ireland that the loss of specialist staff will result in fewer courses being offered at such colleges.

Mr Devine said it will mean

“some courses will have to be cancelled and, therefore, it will mean fewer places for students, with a knock-on effect for the following year”.

Ross O Neill speaks about his Smedia win and his time at BCFE

32687dcbc44e6f12fc7243139ec84522

Ross O Neill – Winner of Blog of the Year 2013

Fresh from his Smedia award for blog of the year I managed to grab a quick interview with Ross.  The Smedia awards had over 1500 entries across all the categories and Ross bet off stiff competition from other bloggers to be crowned blog of the year.

‘’Filmfixx winning the Smedias felt simply amazing, I was chuffed. I didn’t expect to win I was happy Filmfixx was nominated and then shortlisted. Filmfixx is not that old so it was nice to see that the site could compete in the media awards with the best after such a short period of time.’’

Ross explained that he first set up Filmfixx to create side project that involved his skills across the media platform.

‘’It was a personal project to stay up to date with film but luckily became much more over time.’’

Ross confirmed that BCFE students helped him focus on Filmfixx.

‘’I placed Filmfixx on a laptop in front of at least 10 tables of students from various ages, backgrounds and asked what they liked about the site after viewing it for 5mins and what they would change if they had a chance.’’

He agreed that it helped him greatly by just asking students for a little bit on input and some help. He added that all students in BCFE are friendly and willing to help each other no matter what the project is.

Ross attended DIT before BCFE where he gained skills in computer science and digital. He explained that BCFE is very different compared to what he was used to.

‘’BCFE is very different but different in a good way.’’

He explained that BCFE students are from walks of life either starting on the journey to higher education or returning to brush up on industry skills or simply returning to learning. The corridors are filled with friendly faces.

‘’You walk in and recognise everyone and know lecturers by names and you are not a student number to them.’’

With the news that BCFE will lose ten lecturers in September Ross agreed that people should fight to save BCFE. He argued that BCFE has on many occasions proven its worth using the Smedias as an example.

‘’Our students are able to compete against University/Institutes of Technology  level entries and take even more awards home than some of the best Universities of Ireland ‘’

He finished by adding

‘’From the various success [stories] be it awards by students, to the various alumni who hold high level jobs [they] will all agree that BCFE played a vital role. I think it is well worth the fight.’’

Save BCFE Rallying this Thursday

BCFE campaign Save Ballyfermot College will be rallying outside Dail Eireann from 5.30 – 7 pm this Thursday (25th April).  The rally is against the increased pupil teacher ratio.

If you want to join and support the college they are meeting at Buswells Hotel at 5.15 sharp to make there way up to the Dail. Placards and banners are appreciated but the most important thing is to come and support the college.

Whats the protest about?

The Budget saw  Mr Quinn increase the pupil teacher ratio from 17:1 to 19:1. It is only two more students per class?

Why are Save Ballyfermot College protesting?

The government have capped the amount of students that can attend Ballyfermot so we cannot take more in. From speaking to politicians on the topic they really haven’t grasped the fallout from this. BCFE stand to lose 10 teachers. 10 specialist teachers whose skills and knowledge are unsubstitutable. If these specialists are not in place then we lose courses. Students lose the opportunity to study. More people end up on social welfare.

What the people are saying…

Matt Gibbons, Ex  Radio Student BCFE

”We can’t loose BCFE because its good for the area and with it there it will drive more students to Ballyfermot and in doing this it will drive local business’s and everybody will be working together to improve this”

BCFE logo

Dan Pitcher, Sports Reporter FM 104, Ex Radio Student BCFE

”I was recently shocked to learn that courses in Ballyfermot College are under threat. It would be a devastating blow to the world of Media in Ireland if the college was lost. Ballyfermot has an excellent reputation in people getting into work in the industry after OR during study. The practical aspects of the media courses and the support of the teaching staff(Some of whom were/are in the business themselves) is just part of the reason Ballyfermot has such a brilliant reputation. I really hope someone with a brain cell is able to keep the college going…it would be a disaster of epic proportions if the college were to close”

Michaela Hayes, Works for Radio Nova Ireland, Ex Radio Student BCFE

”The thing I like most about Ballyer is the classes are tiny and you get to know everyone and your lectures.. I’m dyslexic and all the teachers in BCFE spent loads of extra time with me going over stuff I didn’t get in order to make sure did well.. If I was in a bigger college that wouldn’t have happened and I would of dropped out and never done anything with my life.. I also still talk to loads of the lecturers to this day and if it wasn’t for Bernard I wouldn’t have my job in Nova now”

Jay Coghlan,

”BCFE has established itself as a leader in animators( past students have won Grammys) radio presenters( Rick o Shea) musicians( Wallis Bird, Damien Dempsey, Micky Joe Harte, Mundy) artist! It also offers a way to continue into a degree course”

Emma Duggan, Ex Media Student, BCFE

You only have to look at the amazing credibility of so many BCFE alumni to realise the skills and careers people have gained from BCFE. The staff and facilities give students some of the best preparation for the real world! Judging from my own 3 years spent there studying media, money should be spent on further developing the facilities this college offers. I say all this only on the knowledge of the media/art/music aspect of the college which I am familiar with. Personally BCFE was always my 1st choice of college in 6th year, the CAO didnt have much effect on me because I knew I only wanted to go to BCFE because of it’s brilliant reputation for media which i wanted to study. Speaking from experience, the loss of BCFE would be more than closing down a college of further education it would be depriving people of an education and experience in a place that I can only say rises above the college of further education status. This place deserves to grow out of this status and into a college or IT in the future, not be taken away from us.

Jeanne Colwell, Ex BCFE Lecturer in Law

BCFE has produced a long line of ultra-successful graduates. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been told by people working in industry that they would always favor employing a graduate from BCFE over others as they have been taught how to do the job properly and not just the theory behind it. This sets BCFE apart from other Further Education colleges and it should therefore be treated as an exception to the new SOLAS bill rather than suffer as a result of it. To lose the college as we know it would be tantamount to gross negligence on the part of the decision-makers.”
